Background of the Study

Chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension are prevalent among the elderly, often exacerbated by poor dietary habits (Adamu & Ibrahim, 2024). A diet high in saturated fats, refined sugars, and sodium has been linked to increased risks of these conditions, while nutrient-rich diets can mitigate their impact (Ojo et al., 2023).

In Kaduna State, the burden of diet-related chronic diseases among the elderly population is rising. However, there is limited data on the dietary patterns contributing to these health conditions. This study aims to assess the prevalence of diet-related chronic diseases among elderly individuals in Kaduna and explore the relationship between diet and disease progression.

Statement of the Problem

The increasing prevalence of chronic diseases among the elderly in Kaduna State poses a major public health challenge. Many older adults suffer from conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity due to poor dietary habits and limited access to nutritious foods. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the direct correlation between diet and chronic disease prevalence in this demographic. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the impact of dietary intake on chronic disease progression.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To determine the prevalence of diet-related chronic diseases among elderly individuals in Kaduna State.

  2. To examine the dietary factors contributing to chronic disease development.

  3. To recommend dietary strategies for managing and preventing chronic diseases in older adults.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of diet-related chronic diseases among elderly individuals in Kaduna State?

  2. How do dietary habits contribute to chronic disease progression?

  3. What dietary interventions can help manage and prevent chronic diseases in older adults?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Diet-related chronic diseases are highly prevalent among the elderly in Kaduna State.

  2. Poor dietary habits significantly contribute to chronic disease progression.

  3. Nutritional modifications can help manage and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on elderly individuals in Kaduna State, examining the prevalence and dietary factors influencing chronic diseases. Limitations include self-reported dietary data, which may be subject to inaccuracies, and genetic predispositions that may influence disease occurrence.

Definitions of Terms

  • Chronic Diseases: Long-term health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

  • Dietary Factors: Nutritional components that influence health outcomes.

  • Nutritional Modifications: Dietary changes aimed at improving health.
